No one told me God would speak to me. I didn’t really know exactly what it meant to “follow God’s will,” but I talked the good Christian talk like all the other “church goers.”
Inside I knew there was something I longed for when I read God’s Word, but I didn’t know what to expect.
As I needed to hear from God during tough times, I think I abandoned myself and what I thought my time with God should look like. I knew I was empty and desperately longed for Him to fill me up. As I emptied myself of me, He replaced me with more of Him.
It is obvious from Scripture we were made with a longing to hear from Him. But do we ignore it? Do we have time for it?
John 3:29-30 is so important in helping us see this and gives us “the antidote” if we aren’t hearing from Him.
“The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. 30 He must become greater; I must become less.”
Are we waiting and eager to hear from God as John the Baptist is in this example?
As he hears from Him, he is FULL of joy. I have experienced no greater joy than to hear His Words for me. To know the Creator of the Universe has things He wants to tell little ‘ol me, blows my mind. And that joy is so filling, that even in the darkest day, it could make you feel as if you could burst.
So, why didn’t I have that experience reading God’s Word before? I believe it had a lot to do with verse 30 from above:
“He must become greater; I must become less.”
If we look again at our sports metaphor, players aren’t going to play a great game if they are all going in with their own strategies instead of listening to the coach. Sometimes as a player, we might think we know better than the coach, and if you play that way, it might make you look better for a moment, but you aren’t going to win in the end.
We all want to end well.
So let’s play well.
